Prisoners of Conscience

These prisoners of conscience are championed by Parliamentarians who advocate on their behalf. They highlight their cases and those of all people who are unjustly detained and imprisoned on account of of their faith or belief, regardless of whatever that faith of belief might be. Through these efforts we will establish a more focused and continuous advocacy on their behalf.

Aung San Suu Kyi

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, once the de facto leader of Myanmar and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, spent her 80th birthday imprisoned under harsh conditions, serving a 27-year sentence following the 2021 military coup that overthrew her elected government. Once celebrated for her decades-long nonviolent struggle for democracy, Suu Kyi has now been held incommunicado for over four years, with grave concerns for her well-being. Her imprisonment is part of a broader crackdown, with over 22,000 political prisoners currently detained in Myanmar.

While Suu Kyi is widely admired for her courage and sacrifice, her legacy is also marked by controversy, particularly her defense of the military during the Rohingya genocide. Despite these flaws, her detention and the broader repression in Myanmar are a gross injustice. It urges the UK and international community to act: by supporting democratic forces, sanctioning the junta and its backers, providing humanitarian aid, and holding perpetrators accountable. Suu Kyi’s birthday is used as a call to recommit to the fight for Myanmar’s freedom and democratic future.
